There's a WOMAN Coach in the NFL!!!
Just a few weeks ago I had mentioned in my sports fact of the week that the NFL was considering letting a female become a coach as long as she can make a player better. Well...IT HAS HAPPENED! Congratulations are in order to Jen Welter who landed an internship with the Arizona Cardinals. As a woman, this made me very excited considering that in my future I see myself as a team owner (I'll keep you updated).
I wonder if she is doing this to get her foot in the door for other opportunities or if being a NFL coach was something that she wanted to do all along since she was a pro-football and rugby player herself. I actually had gotten a man's opinion on her being hired and he said that he doesn't think that it is going to work out because ain't no 300 pound man going to listen to a woman. I find that a little hard to believe because I'm pretty sure that he listens to his mother, or maybe even his wife if he's married.
There's nothing wrong with a man listening to a woman. We can know as much as a man does. Besides, there are plenty of men coaching women sports. I don't thing that there is anything in the handbooks that states that women cannot coach men sports. We just never had the chance to until now. It's about time that us women get the chance to showcase our talents in an all male dominated world. We LOVE sports too! We just have work a little harder to prove ourselves.
There are some of us that didn't play sports but want to commentate, sideline report, of just write. With that being said I wonder how hard it would be if I was to apply for a coaching position in professional sports. That's not until the near future. I still want to get more years of experience under my belt before I would even set myself up for the okey doke. As a woman I couldn't be more proud of what women has accomplished in the sports industry! I have a great feeling that things will start to be more easier and equally available in the years to come for women in sports. We don't just have to be behind the scenes and on the sidelines all the time.
You've heard my thought for today....Stay tuned for more Helen Knows Her Sports!

WOW! What A Game!!!
This past Sunday August 3, 2015 I witnessed one of the BEST hard fought games in women's basketball. The 3-time Eastern Conference Champions the Atlanta Dream hosted their annual "Dream Pink" game against the defending WNBA Champions the Phoenix Mercury. This game was dedicated to help find a cure for Breast Cancer. An auction followed soon after and the proceeds were donated to the Grady Avon Breast Cancer Center.
In the first quarter after tip off, the Phoenix Mercury missed their first shot and the Dream rebounded the ball. As they approached their basket, Angel McCoughtry drained a three and put the Dream on the board. From there, Phoenix Mercury forward Candice Dupree dominated the quarter by making all four of her field goals and getting to the foul line. Both Brittney Griner (Mercury) and Anika Henry (Dream) were in foul trouble with two each. The first quarter score was 15-20.
Second Quarter
The second quarter began with the Mercury much drive and enthusiasm. Their defense was just a little too much for the Dream to handle. They were grabbing both offensive and defensive rebounds, blocking, and stealing the ball. For the first six and a half minutes, Phoenix held Atlanta to the 15 points they had from the first quarter. This time, it was Monique Currie who stepped up for the Mercury by scoring a total of 10 points. With 3:44 left the Atlanta Dream came alive when Angel McCoughtry scored two back to back field goals. Soon after, Anika Henry then hit back to back field goals resulting Brittney Griner's third foul on the second one sending her to the foul line. She hit the "and one". At the two minute mark both teams were creating stops preventing the other team from scoring. With half a second on the clock, Tiffany Hayes hits a buzzer beater three pointer going into halftime with the score being 31-43.
Halftime
Festivities included honoring ALL Breast Cancer Survivors and a performance from the Atlanta Dream Supremes, an elderly dance team with ALL grandmothers on it!
Third Quarter
When the Atlanta Dream came out for the third quarter the crowd was on their feet! Atlanta fed off of the their excitement leading them to score 14 straight points in the first five minutes! The Mercury only scored six. From here the Dream's defense was phenomenal. They were grabbing both the offensive and defensive rebounds, getting defensive stops, and steals. Speaking of steals, Shonni Schimmel (Dream) acquired back to back steals resulting in back to back three pointers MAKING IT A NAIL BITER in the last two minutes of the quarter! Although the Mercury were outscored by the Dream 22-10 they fought hard to stay in the game and the score ended up being tied 53-53 keeping the crowd on their toes preparing for the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Both teams came out with a lot of fight going into the last 10 minutes of the game! The crowd was on its feet cheering for both teams. Philips arena all of a sudden got quiet due to the careless mistakes made on the court. There were no baskets made in the first two minutes. All of a sudden, Shonni Schimmel awoke the crowd by hitting a three! The game then turns into a defensive battle with both teams getting to the foul line and scoring field goals, but the Phoenix was still able to hold on to the lead with 67 points. Both teams was able to score more points, but it was only due to getting to the foul line. At that moment, time was winding down and it was to the last sixty seconds. The Dream had possession and got it to the hands of Angel McCoughtry. She ended up losing the ball and Phoenix walked away with the win.
The Atlanta Dream's next home game is on August 14, 2015 against Maya Moore and the Minnesota Lynx. I hope you enjoyed this read and felt as if you were at the game!
Stay tuned.....

Twin Sports TV/Atlanta Invitational II
ATLANTA-On Saturday May 16th, 2015, Exposure Basketball Events a company founded in 2011 for youth basketball tournaments hosted the Atlanta Invite II 2015 at the Osborne High School in Marietta, GA. There, about 14 teams ranging from ages five to 17 were scheduled to play starting at 9 AM. At 12 PM, the Atlanta Hurricanes was set to take on the Skillset Vipers and media company Twin Sports TV was present for tipoff.
Twin Sports TV is a media production company founded by identical twin sisters Renita Deloatch and Regina Deloatch-Ratliff. Born and raised in Newport News Virginia they are now relocated to Atlanta, GA and are taking over youth sports and exposing the talents of these young athletes to the world! Back to the game, in the first half it started out pretty slow. You can tell that the boys were just starting to figure out how to run the plays, work with one another, and get into the groove of the game considering that they only had five minute quarters. By halftime, there were points on the board and both teams came alive leaving everyone to anticipate what the second half will have in store.
As the second half began, both teams came out with enthusiasm and determination making it seem like you were watching either a top high school, college, or maybe even a NBA game. These young men were only in the 7th grade! There were three point shots made, defensive stops, and creative plays. The highlight of this game was in the fourth quarter with 4.9 seconds to go on the clock. The score was 39-40 and the Atlanta Hurricanes were about to inbound the ball. As the ball was in route to a teammate, a player from the Vipers stole the ball and was able to bank in the layup. It left everyone shocked who witnessed it! The final score was 40-41.
From that game the Twin Sports TV crew was able to catch the tip off of a 6th grade girls' game located in the other gym. It was the Southern Soul versus the Skillset Vipers. As the game began, watching them made the question pop up in your head “Who said that girls can't play basketball?” In the first quarter, it was more of a defensive game with a lot of stops. With the missed shots, the score was only 8-12. in the second quarter, the Vipers set the tone with taking control of the game. They were making more shots, stealing the ball, and grabbing offensive and defensive rebounds. They went into halftime leading the Soul with a score of 9-18.
In the third quarter, the Soul came out with a little more determination by driving to the basket to draw fouls, making foul shots, and making their own stops to hold the Vipers to only scoring one point making the score 13-19. In the fourth both teams were looking to stay alive. At this point, there were many jump balls and missed foul shots. The Vipers were still able to pull through with the win and the final score was 17-24. The Dez Bryant Catch...
This past Sunday, it seemed like karma came back around to the Dallas Cowboys when the referees reversed the call when Dez Bryant caught the ball. It was devastating. Especially to the Cowboys fans. I know me personally, I was jumping up and down screaming because I felt that it was a good catch. Once I seen the ref take the field, I knew it wasn't going to be good.
I just cannot believe that that call was reversed. I feel that there are no good explanations to why the call was made. THAT WAS CLEARLY A CATCH!!! In my opinion, the NFL needs to have a meeting once the season is actually over on how to make better calls. If you take a look at the replay, you can see that the ball was in his hands. Little do they know, calls like this makes some NFL fans feel that the games are rigged!
This organization is too big and successful to have their fans, who is one of the reasons it exists think that there is some illegal things going on within the front office. I hope that next season brings better calls because I see the NFL losing some fans in the near future! I can't even imagine how Dez Bryant is feeling right now. I bet he is still distraught. I know I would be.
If I were him, I would have been in Roger Goodell's office the first thing Monday morning! He would have really had to do a break down in order for me to believe that it was an incomplete pass! It may be a while before Bryant will be able to get over this because in all reality, he had his hands on the ball and Dallas was going to win the game. Well that's all I have to say for right now, but I hope that Dallas have another great run next season and they get to advance so they can go on another Super Bowl run! That's all I have to say for now...Stay tuned and have a good day!!!
